Job advert scams
Fraudsters are increasingly using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and even text messages to lure victims with fake job offers. These scams often promise easy money for simple tasks, but they’re designed to steal your personal information or trick you into making payments.
How it can happen
Scammers pose as recruiters or employers and advertise fake jobs that seem legitimate. These can include offers to:
- Watch videos or review content for payment.
- Complete simple tasks with the promise of high rewards.
- Pay a fee to apply, submit a CV, or proceed to the next recruitment stage.
- Purchase equipment or training materials upfront.
Some scams start with small payments to build trust, then ask for larger sums to “unlock” higher rewards. Others impersonate real companies, using logos and job titles to appear credible.
Warning signs to look out for
- Requests for payment: Genuine employers and recruiters never ask candidates to pay fees during the hiring process.
- Unrealistic offers: Jobs that promise high pay for little effort or vague responsibilities should be treated with caution.
- Poor communication: Messages with spelling mistakes, generic greetings, or pressure to respond quickly can be a red flag.
- Unusual requests: Be wary if asked to provide personal or financial details early on, especially if the job offer seems rushed.
How to protect yourself
- Research the company: Look up the professional website and contact details independently.
- Verify job listings: Use trusted job boards and avoid offers from unknown sources.
- Be cautious with personal data: Don’t share sensitive information unless you’re sure the employer is genuine.
