Beware the money mule
A money mule is a person that allows a criminal to use their bank account to transfer money.
How it can happen
The people organising the crime, known as ‘mule herders’, may try to befriend you and request a favour or approach you with unsolicited offers to make easy money. Pay particular attention to suspicious behaviour online, especially across social media, dating apps, or anything similar.
Even if you don't know you're taking part in criminal activity, you could still end up with a criminal record, your bank account could be closed, you may struggle to get any form of credit and you could be putting yourself and your family at risk – mule herders can resort to violence or threats if you don’t let them continue using your account.
How you can protect yourself
Be cautious of anyone
- Asking to use your bank account to transfer money.
- Offering to provide a ‘cut’ or percentage of money you transfer for them.
- Asking for your banking details or activation codes.
- Offering quick cash, investments, or even job offers that appear questionable or too good to be true.
